WILL YOU HOME SHOP?

The idiot box has given birth to yet another idea in the form of ‘home shopping’; but with the Indian psyche of touch & feel shopping ruling big, the test is getting tougher

But despite cerebral numbing statistics, home shopping industry’s journey hasn’t been easy and will be tougher. The problem here is from the consumer end: Indians are known to embrace experiential buying habits (they touch & feel the product when they purchase one). With home shopping, this touch and feel factor is missing. “Two years back, there was no credibility associated with this medium. Barcode is something that is considered credible. So we decided to pick the colors from our logo and put them in the barcode, so that the product looks more authentic” says Malhotra. He sounds convinced about the business model; most Indians still aren’t.

There is a challenge on the supplier end too: it’s hard to convince manufacturers to sell their products through this platform. Manufacturers want to sell their products through a channel, which gives consumers an experience and therefore has a longer lasting influence on their memories. “Cameras fall into the category of products that consumers want to experience. For example, a consumer may not understand the difference between a 10 megapixel and a 5 megapixel camera, unless he actually tries it in person. This is where home shopping channels can’t help. No doubt they are educative, but they lack where it matters the most. It’s a bad idea,” says Alok Bhardwaj, Sr. VP, Canon India.

However, there are those who are willing to ride the new bus. For instance, a trade like insurance, which needs much convincing on the part of the seller, is now finding its way into the home shopping biz. Last month, Home Shop 18 tied up with Bajaj Allianz for the distribution of Bajaj Allianz’s insurance services. Paritosh Joshi, CEO, Star CJ, tells us, “There are certainly many MNCs that have successfully used home shopping as a critical distribution channel in other geographies and see STAR CJ Alive’s entry as the beginning of a new chapter in the Indian shopping landscape. However, STAR CJ Alive is also building partnerships among strong, home-grown brands for whom home shopping is an altogether new, and little understood distribution model.”

THE JOBS THAT JOBS DOES

It doesn’t usually happen with every tech gadget but there are exceptions and with Apple it happens every time. Buzz is that iPad is already overbooked. Now it remains to be seen how tablet computers will create the required technological platform for newer kinds of user interface. Superior user interface and a mind boggling e-commerce experience will certainly set Apple apart from the rest in the league. Nevertheless, iPad isn’t going to change the world the way its small predecessor did. It’ll have to fight its way to the top. In some cases, Apple’s implementation will be superior to its competitors, but there are fronts where apple’s iPad will be inferior too. Apple launched the iPod in 2007 with two models priced at $500 and $600, with not many applications; and now the 3G model is available only for $100. Will iPad toe the same line? Quite possible, and perhaps correctly so.

IIPM Editorials - Nutrivita PRESENTS 100 MARKETING BRAINS THAT MOVE AND SHAKE INDIA

S. C. Ahluwalia,

GM Marketing, BSNL

My best marketing moment was launching the Hindustan Bol Raha Hai campaign featuring Deepika Padukone. In Hindustan Bol Raha Hai campaign one can see Deepika helping a mountain village woman talk to her son on her mobile and helping a rural woman in Rajasthan in delivering a baby by connecting her to a doctor through the Internet on a laptop. The campaign also shows a family on a tractor talking on a mobile and an engineer guiding his workers; a teacher teaching kids in a school using a laptop; a man on an elephant cheering for her daughter, all by using the crystal clear network and services of BSNL present in every corner of the country. As a marketing person, we take lot of pride as this particular advertisement was the “Most Watched Ad” of the country in a survey conducted in 2009. In fact, every product launched by BSNL is definitely encapsulated with the prime brand attributes, and distinguishably is ingrained with its individual set of USPs to offer, which further reaches out to a consumer as a unique service or benefit, simplifying the routine functionalities of life. For instance, BSNL 3G being the fastest form of mobile internet is an altogether unique product offering to the consumers and is available in almost 318 cities today with a potential of selling itself on its product stature alone. We also aim at furthering our scope of 3G services with a comprehensive nationwide roll out and a revision of tariffs that has already started to materialise, regionally. And adding on to the wide spectrum of innovative services, besides 3G & Wi-Max we have also ventured into the Enterprise solutions, that not only lets us expand our horizon of services, but eventually gearing up for our revenue from an added resource.

Launch of Ford Figo in India has been a moment, which is very close to my heart. I have worked for many years with Ford Motor Company and have helped in launching various products across the world, but with Figo having the potential to change the magnitude of the game that Ford is playing today in India, it gives me immense pleasure to work with the team. The launch of Figo is all the more important as it is expected to bring in volume for the company, which is not present dealing in a segment where the bulk of the cars are sold in India.

Pradeep Bakshi

Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, Voltas

Of all the experiences I had in the marketing of brand Voltas so far, the campaign conducted in October 2007 stands out as the most important, as we had just launched ‘A-star rated’ ACs at that time. It was pivotal, as we were the first ones to launch it and the industry was not ready for such a product. But eventually we did get some good mileage out of it. The manner in which we built a baby brand into a cash-generator is some memory.

2009: BAD’VERTISING --> 2010: GOOD’VERTISING

having grown at an average rate of 15-18% over the five year period 2004-2008, it was but natural for the Indian media and advertising industry to expect a much better year in 2009. But none anticipated the dramatics of the market dynamics that were to unfold in 2009 – the ad pie shrunk by a full 10% and the revenues dipped to Rs.186.70 billion (as compared to Rs.207.17 billion in 2008). Be it print, outdoor or cinema, their ad revenues were bleeding to the extent that print media lost Rs.20 billion in ad revenues (a de-growth of 21%).The only industry segment which survived the onslaught was Internet, which grew by double digits clocking in revenues to the tune of Rs.4.53 billion (as compared to Rs.3.63 billion in 2008). The media and advertising fraternity would certainly like to forget the year 2009 and focus on 2010 wherein it is estimated that the advertising pie would be worth Rs.211.45 billion (a good 13% increase over 2009, considering the 10% dip). The media and advertising industry to a large extent is perception driven and as rates are beginning to firm up once again, the market will expectably be on the upswing. The industry forecasts are positive, television and radio are projected to grow at 15% and 20% respectively, while print media is all set to reverse the trend and grow by 9%. Clearly, with the worst over, these projections are in a way welcome relief for the industry.

THE FUSION OF A TRIBE, QUITE DIGITALLY

The downturn has certainly made companies more sensitive to the returns they achieve from their marketing investment and has sharpened their focus on the online medium. Pawan Goyal, MD – Asia and Middle East, Tribal Fusion explains ways to deal with the challenges of space, cost, impact and targeting that are associated with digital marketing

But why would an advertiser chose Tribal Fusion over other digital marketing solutions provider?
We are the biggest ad network not only in India, but also in the entire Asia and Middle East region. According to comScore, we reach more than 50% of online users in India. We are client neutral in our approach and as a result, our competitors like Yahoo, Google, MSN and Rediff all advertise with us for their branding requirements.

Social medium is one of the biggest platform for advertisers today. What innovation are you doing in terms of marketing on the social media platform?
We have almost all popular social networking sites on our network, which enables us to build anonymous personalised profile about web users. This allows us to deliver personalised messages to users based on their psychographics and behavioural patterns. Not only that, it also equips us with information relating to a user’s interest and hobbies, providing a fair understanding of their lifestyle, hence allowing us to target them effectively.

Popular Internet marketing solutions include competitor analysis, search engine submissions, link building, e-mail, RSS feeds and blog marketing. Which out of these has the greatest potential and why? Is there any other form that is fast emerging?
Search, display and e-mail marketing are different digital channels of marketing. As more users join the broadband wagon and broadband speed, I believe that Video Advertising will take-off in this market very soon. We offer Full Engagement Video (FEV) ad units in our product suite. FEV is a full-page video ad that dramatically increases user engagement by taking over the entire screen. In addition to this, the launch of mobile 3G services on a large scale will open another medium to deliver advertising.

Has the awareness among consumers increased by using vertical-specific targeting tools in order to drive immediate purchase?
Online medium allows marketers to collect valuable information about individuals. We can know of their location, interests and purchases based on their past online behavior. Reaching the right user with a specific message helps to drive users to the purchase funnel.

Affiliate marketing boosts the sales of companies with the help of collaborators especially in online medium. What is your take on it?
Affiliate marketing works with long tail and remnant inventory. It helps in filling in whatever inventory is left and in increasing the sales of clients. However, when it comes to delivering customers at scale and within brand safe environment, affiliate marketing has huge constraints.

NIGHT’S OVER FOR SAMSONITE

Samsonite has suddenly become aggressive in promoting its 110-year-old brand. Apart from coming out with an ad campaign, Samsonite is also trying its hands at in-film placement with My Name is Khan. All the leading airports of the country have been donned with Samsonite’s ads showing King Khan with a Samsonite bag. But why such sudden focus on advertising and marketing? Ask this to the Samsonite people and they will deny about any such sudden instincts as the company claims that it was the slowdown that put a stymie in their ad budget. And with slowdown bidding adieu, it’s quiet logical for Samsonite to come back into advertising again. What’s truly missing is the promotion of the group’s blockbuster product American Tourister? “We’ll be soon rolling promotional activities for American Tourister also,” says Subrata Dutta, COO, Samsonite South Asian Pvt Ltd.Subrata Dutta, COO, Samsonite

WHEN SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

First Rajshri Productions, then Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment and now Yash Raj Films. What is it that’s bringing these movie mavericks to the idiot box? 4Ps B&M does a checkout with some eminent industry insiders...

Interestingly, this hints that with more and more filmmakers coming to the small screen, there is a huge scope to expand the viewer base of TV even further. This will also pave way for more niche content, which is a norm in the West now. “YRF, for example, is doing shows that are targeted more towards an urban niche,” says Zee TV’s Motwani. But then, it will take some time before such niche content makes inroads in the Indian TV space.

A rather interesting observation is that most filmmakers that are coming to TV are the traditional ones. The revolutionary Gen Y filmmakers apparently are still shying away from TV. As Purnendu Shekhar, writer of shows like Ballika Vadhu and Jyoti explains, “The leaders of new wave cinema wrongly think TV to be a regressive medium. They think it doesn’t match up to their ‘intellectual’ capacity. But sooner or later, they too will join the small screen keeping in mind the huge potential it has.” Truly, as Planman’s Shuhoshekhar says, “When the fat lady sings and when the doves come calling (read, slowdown), the TV provides salvation!” Amen!

HENCE PROVED: EGGHEADS DO SELL

Set amidst the canvas of two of India’s greatest entertainment options – the general elections and IPL – the Vodafone Zoozoos managed to overshadow them both...

VODAFONE

CAMPAIGN: Zoozoos

AGENCY: Ogilvy India

OBJECTIVE: To position Vodafone as an innovation leader in the mobile service category, thereby gaining traction for the brand. And to do so, leverage Indian Premier League (IPL) in a manner that the brand proves to be the most salient and engaging throughout the event.

STRATEGIC CHALLENGE: To differentiate. Despite having an array of innovative products & services, they lacked the qualities of being sustainable differentiators for Vodafone as competitors quickly adapted them with near parity in prices. The challenge was also to use an immensely crowded & cluttered property like IPL to differentiate & establish an emotional connect with customers.

BIG IDEA: To allow consumers to discover something new everyday with Zoozoos. Since brand communication is subject to fatigue, it was decided to surprise viewers by launching a new product/service message each day of the event.

COMMUNICATION TOUCH POINTS: The main aspect of the communication strategy was the TVCs that included 29 simple stories told through 29 films – almost one each for each day of the IPL. The egg-faced creatures were captured by cameras enjoying the semi-finals of IPL with spectators. Vodafone Zoozoos were also invited as special guests with commentators seeking their gibberish opinion. Consumer engagement was also built via print, outdoor and retail level POS that used Zoozoos to drive relevant cricket-related offerings like score alerts, match schedules, et al. An SMS-based contest – Star of the Match – gave 20 lucky winners a chance to experience IPL in South Africa.

EFFECTIVENESS: 11 million viewers tuned into Set Max to watch the Zoozoo interview during IPL, which was uploaded on YouTube and had over 50,000 views in less than a week. Zoozoo TVCs were viewed by over 41 million people across the country. As per TNS Synovate, Vodafone emerged as the most recognised brand in IPL. Zoozoos on-ground activity during the IPL semi-finals achieved over four million views from TV coverage. Zoozoos attracted over 315,000 fans and over 10 million page views in less than two months on Facebook. Ad Age named the Zoozoo campaign the ‘Top Viral campaign in the world.’

Will the lion roar again?

Slowdown had a sobering effect on DLF’s meteoric rise in the early years of this decade. With a new look and renewed vigour, the company attempts to claw its way back to its glory days. by Virat Bahri

The primary prerogative was to get rid of excess baggage – businesses as well as lands where development was not anticipated in the next 5-7 years. Out of a divestment target of Rs.55 billion for FY 2009-10, the company unlocked value of Rs.18 billion, and targets a further Rs.28 billion in the current fiscal. Hotel venture Aman Resorts is immediately on the block. Reports say that Malaysian Sovereign Wealth Fund Khazanah is expected to take it up for around $300-350 million. DT Cinemas was sold to PVR last year with a further commitment that DLF would have PVR as its exclusive multiplex anchor tenant for all its future malls. They attempted to divest the wind power business (valued at Rs.10 billion) as well, but decided to retain it, as they were unable to get the right suitor. The company also pulled back on four of its SEZ projects in West Bengal, Gujarat, Haryana & Orissa on account of the dip in commercial space demand. DLF is now planning to revive the one in West Bengal, but the other three are still denotified. But according to G. P. Savlani, Resident Director, CREDAI, “Real estate players will not talk about SEZ much after implementation of the Direct Tax Code (which would cut all income tax benefits).” DLF has also restructured its business into two business units last December. The development company is further demarcated geographically into Gurgaon, Super Metros and rest of India and the annuity company is divided into offices, malls and facilities management & utilities to better streamline businesses and ensure aggregation of returns and stable cash flows from these businesses.

As far as the devil of debt is concerned, the gross debt has increased to Rs.216.77 billion by the close of March this year as compared to a gross opening debt of Rs.163.2 billion on April 1, 2009 (due in part to the purchase of SC Asia’s stake in Caraf) and a D/E ration of around 0.75x. Interest rate has been brought down to 10.5% from 11.98% in December 2008 and period has increased from under one year to 3-9 years. Besides, the focus is on faster execution of existing projects.

The most critical aspect for DLF’s revival will be the pick up in demand. The Lower Parel project gives indications that the exuberance is back. But Savlani says that it is unique to the Mumbai market only, where Lodha Developers won the contract for the 101-storey tower project recently for Rs.40.5 billion. But residential is definitely on the revival mode in different parts of the country as consumer sentiment improves with booming economy, lower interest rates and more economically priced projects. Param Desai, Analyst – Real Estate, Angel Broking, quotes, “FY 2011 (for DLF) will be largely driven by residential sales, both middle income and luxury.” Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation projects a shortfall of 26.53 million dwelling units in urban areas by 2012. Absorption rate of residential units has increased to 21% in Q1 2010 from 15% in the previous quarter, according to a report by Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj (JLLM). DLF anticipates bookings of 1-1.5 msf for FY 2010-11 in the luxury segment (Mumbai & Delhi), 2-3 msf in city centres/high end (Gurgaon, Chennai & Cochin) & 12-14 msf in the mid-income/value housing segment.

The City of Nizams: Unearthing treasures of the past

When we were going past an old transport and shopping complex selling a range of commonplace things, she halted the taxi and got down. It was Dewan Devdi, a magnificent palace complex where many well-known people of Hyderabad have stayed. The general apathy of the citizens, and their indifference had resulted in the demolition of all buildings within Dewan Devdi – the ‘Aina Khana’, ‘Lakkad Kotha’, ‘Chini Khana’, ‘Nizam Bagh’ and ‘Noor Mahal’. Barring the facade of the gateways, which were built in ‘Regional Mughal Variation’ (RMV) style, the cusped arches, canopied and projected balconies over window openings or ‘jharokas’ lend it a uniquely charming feel.

Envisioned as a replica of heaven on earth, Hyderabad was razed to the ground by Aurangzeb in 1681, after the longest siege of his life. He appointed governors of the city who soon attained autonomy. In 1724, Asaf Jah I, who had been conferred the title Nizam-ul-Mulk, defeated a rival official to gain complete control over the city. Asaf Jah’s successors ruled the land as the Nizams of Hyderabad until a year after the Indian independence. Under the reign of the Nizams, Hyderabad was resurrected economically and culturally and became the largest and wealthiest among the princely states of India. Understandably, Golconda was soon abandoned and Hyderabad became the new capital of the Deccan.

Vidya described the origin and evolution of Hyderabad’s unique composite culture and went on to speak about the Salar Jung Museum’s stupendous collection, rated as one of the world’s largest private collections. Housing India’s largest collections of jewels, the museum reflects the wealth of the Nizams, and more so the penchant of the seventh Nawab – Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (1889-1949) – towards collecting art curios.

As centuries passed, Hyderabad reinvented itself dramatically from its feudal set-up to become the capital of the first linguistic state of India. In its fascinating march from Bhagnagar to Hyderabad to Cyberabad, the story of this city is replete with diverse, engaging, eccentric, and often daring characters, some of whose lives are stranger than fiction.

A multi-faceted Hyderabadi citizen, enjoys a leisurely lifestyle, which involves a love for clothes, jewellery, food, music, literature, arts, and other such indulgences. One can find him peacefully co-existing with people of other religions, for cultural and religious tolerance is an intrinsic attribute of this city. Hindus and Muslims in this once affluent state of the Nizams, did not waste any time re-enacting the conventional conflict, usually instigated by people with vested interests. The priority of both the people has been simply happiness, and of understanding the beauty of co-existence and living alongside members of other various faiths.

Had I been alone in this sojourn, I might have felt overwhelmed by the nostalgia, and at times a little claustrophobic, as I climbed the narrow and winding steps of the staircases in the closed capsule-like towers of Charminar, Golconda fort and Qutub Shahi Tombs. As I took a well-deserved break with my companion, she rewarded me with tales of the times gone by. She made my hands run over the stones and the arches, my legs walk on the trails of time and how history came alive!

What is the reason behind the failure of BJP in Acting as a Good Opposition Party?

The BJP prospects have been marred by internal squabbling. Nitin Gadkari has been brought in to unify the party's rank and file but he is widely perceived to be the RSS' man in the party. It is yet to recover from the shock of the LS polls.

Bipasha in the buff

In 1999 when Bipasha Basu was cutting a career for herself as a model in USA, she featured au naturel in an ad for a New York lottery. The ad showed her as a Rajasthani bride getting ready for her marriage, and its tag line had read ‘All you need is a dollar and a dream.’ Now, the ad has been unearthed and put up on YouTube and Bipasha is aghast but also defiant of the ad, and says that it is beautiful and she’s proud of how she looks in it. As bold as ever, that’s Bips for you!

The curious case of gourmet food

While many international restaurant brands are already in India, a host of others are lining up to commence operations. But almost every CEO B&E met for this story lamented the over-policing by the government... We take a quantitative stock analysis! by Vareen Gadhoke Ray & Swati Sharma

The Conspiracy Theory

In spite of the importance of the restaurant sector to the Indian economy and its immense promise, it has still not fulfilled its potential. While some of the factors responsible are intrinsic and hence can be addressed, but fact that the industry does not get its share of support and encouragement either by way of legislation or by way of enabling infrastructure, is turning to be a huge hindrance to the growth of the sector. “I think logistics and back-end have been always a problem for Indian restaurant players and probably that has stopped us from creating a pan-India brand. But having said that in India the franchisee level is very strong and that often helps for proper expansion,” says Ashish Kapur, MD & Co-Founder, Yo! China. Ajay Kaul, CEO – Indian subcontinent, Domino’s Pizza, further divulges, “Having a strong Indian supply chain does help a lot in cutting down costs and at the same time, what becomes important is to have strong logistics." Some of the key weaknesses that are hampering the growth of the sector are infrastructure (including lack of organised supply chain solutions, cold chain, power & water supply), supply of quality, trained & employable manpower, difficulty in restaurant financing and lastly the complex maze of licensing & taxation laws, which differ from state to state. States Samir Kuckreja – President, NRAI and CEO, Nirula’s, “In spite of the importance of the restaurant sector to the Indian economy and its immense promise, the industry still faces some challenges, which are related to government policies such as over licensing, service tax on commercial rentals & antiquated laws. A restaurateur has to go through the complexity of obtaining multiple licenses for one restaurant – between 10 & 15 in different cities. In fact there are separate licenses needed for playing music, serving liquor, et al. Apart from that the license fees vary across states.”

Although their operational dynamics are different, restaurants have always been clubbed with the hotel industry and do not get the exclusive treatment it deserves as a sector. Be that as it may, industry status to a sector results in a major transformation in terms of outlook, generates investments and instils corporate culture and discipline, which is immensely beneficial to both the economy as well as consumers. Still, it'll be quite sometime before we see India's first foodie billionaire... quite some time!

Sanjay Coutinho
COO, Barista Coffee Company

“Not Chasing Numbers”

B&E: How is Barista different from Café Coffee Day, Mocha & the likes?
SC: Each brand has its own uniqueness and a different set of audience; we are targeting a totally different segment mostly 25 and above, which is a more mature audience while others are targetting youth. Our ambience appeals more to our TG – people on-the-go. The music is somber, the colours are soft, board games like scrabble and chess again target a very mature audience.

B&E: Why is Barista operating a separate niche format?
SC: We have two formats – the Espresso Bar and the Crèmes. In Crèmes we have a lounge format and provide table service. Here everything is different, from locations to menu and ambience. Espresso Bar on the other hand has self service. We launched Crèmes because we had to upgrade a brand a bit.

B&E: How many outlets do you currently have & what are your plans going forward?
SC: Right now we have 210 in India & 20 overseas – 11 in Srilanka, 5 in Middle East, 2 in Oman and 1 in Bangladesh. There is a lot of scope in India and last year we managed to open around 40 outlets. This year also we are targeting the same, however we are not chasing numbers. In tier II cities, we're present in 26 cities. Every brand wants an outlet in tier II cities, so the demand there is of course more than the supply. In a lot of these cities where we have 2 outlets, we do plan to operate 4-5 now.
